Rotherham Grooming Scandal

In the space of ten years over 1,400 young girls were groomed and sexually abused in Rotherham. Many of the children were as young as 11 when the abuse began and was abused in public places. In August 2014, professor Alexis Jay revealed the scale of the abuse and that the very institutions put in place to protect these children failed drastically to the point of aiding the perpetrators. Many young boys and girls were blamed for being abused, ultimately allowing the perpetrators to act with impunity. This photo essay exposes the failings of South Yorkshire Police and Rotherham council as well as the personal stories of victims and the communities response. Commissioned by Der Spiegel Magazine.
